Our Story

Established in 1977 by Dr.’s Tom and Jan Mehlhoff, South Shore Veterinary Hospital began its roots as a small town veterinary clinic that focused on exceptional diagnostic and surgical care.  Dr. Tom's knowledge in clinical pathology and Dr. Jan's surgical skill guided the practice through its first thirteen years.  In 1991, Dr. Jan left the field of veterinary medicine to become a Lutheran pastor, which opened the door for Dr.'s Dave and Ann Enright to come on board as partners. Their addition augmented the high level of excellence in medicine and surgery as both completed post doctorate studies as interns at The Animal Medical Center in New York City in 1987. Dr. Dave's interest in surgery also brought expansion of South Shore's surgical repertoire.  Dr. Tracy was able to join the partnership in 2015 and Dr. Joe in 2018, continuing a tradition of strong medical and surgical care.

The transitions were picture perfect as the practice was able to maintain private family ownership and a desire to build the practice based on emphasizing the importance of relationships as the key to providing the highest quality compassionate veterinary care.  With that foundation established, as both Forest Lake and the practice grew, South Shore Veterinary Hospital has been able to maintain focus on each patient as an individual, so that we are treating the patient; not just the disease or injury.

To better enable us to perform the best medicine and surgery possible, we have a broad scope of diagnostic equipment:  digital whole body x-ray, digital dental x-ray, high speed piezioelectric scaler for dental cleaning, ultrasound, blood pressure monitoring, tonometry for intra-ocular pressures, ECG and echocardiograms, BairHugger warm air blankets and warm water circulating pads to keep surgical and dental patient's temperature controlled, as well as laparoscopic minimally invasive surgical capabilities, and flexible upper and lower GI endoscopy.  South Shore is also privileged to have multiple doctors on staff, all with various interests and areas of expertise, which allows for easy in-house consultations on difficult and perplexing cases.

Affordability is also essential to our philosophy on how to provide the best care for your companions.  We work hard to manage costs; from our pharmacy to lab tests, anesthesia, surgery, as well as working with you in diagnostic test selection, these are all important to ensure the highest quality care at fair and reasonable prices.
